This panorama captures the University of Wisconsin Badgers football team in a highly anticipated match-up with their nationally ranked Big Ten rival Michigan Wolverines at Camp Randall Stadium. The first Badger football team took the field in 1889 and upon formation of the Big Ten conference in 1896, they became the first-ever conference champion. The team's nickname originates in Wisconsin’s early history, when miners came to the state looking for minerals, but without shelter in the winter they had to "live like badgers" in tunnels burrowed into hillsides. As a result, the territory was dubbed the "Badger State," from which the team took its name.
